The "O-fish-oil" word is out: eating fish keeps your heart healthy!

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently recommended that all adults eat at least two servings of fish every week in order to receive a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids. The AHA first recommended consuming fish twice a week in 2000, but recent research underscores the health benefits of eating fish at least that often. In fact, the report suggested that dietary sources alone may not provide sufficient omega-3 oils for those who have certain heart conditions or high triglyceride levels. For those, it was suggested that they utilize supplements to meet their needs.

Not just any fish are recommended, however. The AHA recommends fish that is rich in the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. These two fatty acids are found abundantly only in fish, and not in plants. Low vitamin C levels associated with stroke risk

If the thought of developing scurvy was not enough to get you to eat plenty of citrus fruits, maybe this will: a new study reports that low vitamin C intake may be a risk factor for stroke. A recent study, conducted in Finland, found that men who had chronically low circulating blood levels of vitamin C were two times more likely to have a stroke when compared to men with higher blood levels of vitamin C. According to the researchers, the vitamin C level of those in the highest risk group was equal to drinking only half a glass of orange juice per day.

In addition, their chance of stroke increased if they were overweight and/or had high blood pressure. This study underscores the importance of getting plenty of vitamin C in your diet every day. Garlic and other allium vegetables cut risk for prostate cancer by 50%!

Your mother was right: garlic and onions are good for you. Okay, maybe not for your breath, but definitely for your prostate.

A landmark study in the latest issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reports that men who ate more than a third of an ounce (10 grams or 1 clove of garlic) of allium vegetables (onions, garlic, chives, or scallions) per day, reduced their risk of developing prostate cancer by 50% over those men who do not regularly eat these pungent vegetables. The study, which was conducted in Shanghai, China, looked at the food intake of 238 men. Of the men participating in the study, those with the highest intakes of allium vegetables had a significantly lower risk of prostate cancer when compared to those with the lowest intakes. What’s even more exciting about this study is that these benefits are independent of body size, total calorie intake, and intake of other foods. Boost Heart Health with Omega-3s

It's a well-known fact that omega-3 fatty acids from fish help protect your heart. Now there are two more studies to cement in that evidence. The first, conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health, is exciting because it is the first to find an association between fish consumption and heart health in women. Researchers discovered that women who ate fish just a couple of times a month had a 20% lower risk for dying from heart disease over a 16-year period than women who ate fish less often. Moreover, women who consumed fish a couple of times a week were almost 30% less likely to die of heart disease during a 16-year period.

The second study, also conducted at Harvard, focused on men, omega-3 fatty acids, and death from cardiac arrest. The participants' blood levels of two types of omega-3s, EPA and DHA, were studied. All the men in the study started out healthy with no heart problems. However, over the next 17 years, those with the highest levels of EPA and DHA (obtained from a diet that included fish) were 80% less likely to die from sudden cardiac arrest than men with the lowest levels. This is a significant finding, especially in light of the fact that 250,000 Americans die every year from sudden cardiac arrest, half of who have no prior history of heart disease.

Researchers believe that the key to how omega-3 fatty acids work in the body is that they make their way from the fish that is consumed to the membranes of cells in the heart. Additionally, EPA and DHA have a stabilizing effect on the electrical impulses that control heart rhythm, which can ward off the development of abnormal rhythms that can seemingly arise out of nowhere and prove fatal if not tended to in minutes.

The American Heart Association recommends two meals of fish a week, each consisting of a serving of about 3-4 ounces. Darker-colored fish, like salmon, have more omega-3s than lighter colored species. Unfortunately, many people do not get enough servings of fish per week to make a difference in their heart health. How much Vitamin C is REALLY in your Orange Juice?

If you're counting on your daily glass of orange juice to provide you with the vitamin C you need, think again. Recent research conducted at Arizona State University East showed that an average carton of orange juice could lose more than half of the vitamin C listed on the label by the fourth week after purchase. Investigators bought and tested several different types and brands of orange juice, and analyzed their vitamin C content. The three types tested were: reconstituted from frozen concentrate, cartons of juice with a screw-on cap, and orange juice in a milk-carton-like container. The tests spanned a 30-day period.

In the beginning, the frozen orange juice from concentrate had more vitamin C than the kind in the carton with a screw-on cap, while the orange juice in the milk-carton-like container had the least. However, as time went on, the vitamin C level kept dropping no matter how the juice was stored. For example, at time of purchase a 6-ounce serving of orange juice from a screw-top container yielded 49 milligrams of vitamin C. Four weeks later, a serving from the same container yielded only 18 milligrams of vitamin C. The end amount is just a fraction of what the label claimed.

Broccoli Kills Cancer Culprits

An exciting new study in a recent issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science reports that broccoli and broccoli sprouts contain a phytochemical that kills the bacteria responsible for most stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the phytochemical, sulforaphane killed helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that causes stomach ulcers and often deadly stomach cancers. This is great news, especially since the levels of sulforaphane tested were similar in size to that found in an optimal serving of cruciferous vegetables. Additionally, eating cruciferous vegetables is a lot more reasonable than taking antibiotics, which are usually prescribed to fight these nasty bacteria. For one, antibiotics are costly, and often scarce in many parts of the world. Secondly, antibiotics don't always work, as some strains are resistant to commonly used antibiotics. However, this study showed that sulforaphane even killed helicobacter that was resistant to antibiotic therapy. These two facts alone could have significant public health implications all around the globe.

A Multi A Day Helps Keep the Doctor Away

Two doctors who are prominent Harvard researchers joined a growing list of scientific experts who recognize the benefits of daily supplementation with vitamins. Omega-3s Reverse Cartilage Destruction!

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been associated with promoting joint health, and a recent study from Cardiff University in Wales confirmed that omega-3s can slow — and even reverse! — the destruction of joint cartilage. A study published in the July issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that total homocysteine levels predict mortality risk. Diabetics Have Much Higher Risk of Death

A disturbing new study from Britain suggests that diabetics, regardless of age or income, are much more likely to die, when compared to those without diabetes in a similar demographic group.
After a six-year study, researchers discovered that those with diabetes had death rates more than two times the national average, and those that were diagnosed with diabetes by the age of 40, had their life expectancy lowered by an average of eight years.
Adult onset diabetes (also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes) is at epidemic levels in developed nations and is much more prevalent than Type-I (insulin dependent) diabetes.
Most health experts agree that adult-onset diabetes is primarily brought on by obesity and can be controlled through diet. Obesity rates in developed nations have increased dramatically, and in the United States alone, nearly 60% of the adult population is overweight and/or obese.
Controlling diabetes and weight, currently, is considered a matter of controlling the glycemic response of foods. Foods that have a high glycemic index (foods that cause a rapid rise in blood sugar level) are thought to be the main contributors to weight gain and the development of diabetes. Bad Diets May Breed Deadlier Viruses

Chilling new evidence presented by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggests that poor nutrition leads to mutations of some viruses and creates more dangerous forms.
Mutations that create more dangerous forms of the influenza virus and may contribute to newly virulent outbreaks of viral epidemics ranging from the common cold to AIDS and Ebola may be, in part, caused by deficiencies of certain nutrients.

Deficiencies of selenium allowed the human influenza virus to mutate into more virulent forms in mice, and a similar mutation is likely to occur in people, according to a report in the FASEB Journal, published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. "Once the mutations have occurred, even mice with normal nutrition are more susceptible to the newly virulent strain," explained one of the researchers involved in the study.
The researchers stressed that proper nutrition not only influences the health of an individual, it can ultimately influence the health of society in general.

Carotenoids Promote Healthy Arteries

The carotenoid lutein, (found in spinach, kale, and other leafy green vegetables) appears to prevent the thickening of neck arteries associated with atherosclerosis. This new study1 from University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of California doctors just might explain why diets high in carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables seem to protect cardiovascular health. After studying the results from 480 people between the ages of 40 and 60, scientists discovered that people with the highest blood levels of lutein experienced the least arterial thickening over a period of 18 months. Additionally, arterial cells treated with lutein were less prone to inflammation. The study shows that an increased dietary intake of lutein could very well be protective against the development of early atherosclerosis.

Healthy Hips with Vitamin D!

Japanese scientists discovered that a deficiency of vitamin D in elderly patients disabled by stroke may add to their risk of suffering a hip fracture. A new report printed in the July issue of Stroke stated that stroke patients have a two to four times higher risk of breaking a hip than do individuals with no stroke history. A diet deficient in vitamin D can lead to softer bones due to lack of mineral absorption, notably calcium, the scientists said. For two years, researchers studied 236 stroke patients past their 64th birthday, and found that the vitamin D-deficient group suffered 7.1 times more fractures than those who had sufficient levels of vitamin D.

Carotenoids contribute to a healthy pregnancy

Pregnant women who have low intakes of carotenoids may be at greater risk for developing preeclampsia than those who have adequate carotenoid intakes, say researchers from New York's Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center.

Preeclampsia is a disease that occurs in the mother only during pregnancy, and causes high blood pressure, as well as symptoms such as edema (swelling) and protein in the urine.

Doctors found that pregnant women with low-circulating levels of carotenoids were more likely to develop preeclampsia when compared to pregnant women who had normal levels. Researchers tested for levels of alpha- and beta-carotene, lycopene and canthaxanthin in maternal, umbilical cord, and placental blood in 22 women with normal pregnancies, and an additional 19 who were already diagnosed with preeclampsia.

Pregnant women who had normal levels of carotenoids were much less likely to develop preeclampsia. The researchers stated, "Our findings suggest that oxidative stress and placental antioxidant levels may play key roles in the development of preeclampsia."

Carotenoids, sometimes called "nature's crayons," are the beautiful pigments in plants: the red in tomatoes and strawberries, the orange in carrots, and the yellow in squash. Women, especially pregnant women, need to eat a diet rich in carotenoids. Unfortunately, most do not eat enough carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.

Sports Injuries Treated with Fatty Acids and Antioxidants

A combination of essential fatty acids and antioxidants is an effective treatment for inflammatory injuries common to many athletes.

Researchers working with Denmark's National Rowing Team gave athletes a combination of nutritional supplements to treat overuse injuries. The athletes used the supplements instead of the traditional method of taking non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which can have unwanted side effects.

The athletes were given a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 oils, vitamins A, B6, C and E, plus selenium and zinc. According to the researchers, most athletes responded positively to the treatment in as little as 2-3 weeks.

The study will be published in a scientific journal of sports medicine in the near future.

Athletes and non-athletes alike should take note of this research since it offers an effective method of treatment for joint pain that does not rely on NSAIDs.

Antioxidants can protect the brain from mental decline

An exciting new study published in the March issue of Neurology found that elderly men who took vitamin E and C supplements at least once a week for several years were better protected from mental decline when compared to a similar group of men who did not supplement.

Researchers at the Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii followed a group of 3,385 men that took part in a nutritional supplement survey in 1988; the same men were later tested for cognitive function in 1993. The researchers found that the men who supplemented with both vitamin C and vitamin E over a period of many years, scored much higher than those who did not.

The researchers also discovered that even those men who took only vitamin E or vitamin C between 1988 and 1993 experienced less mental decline than those who did not take supplements.

This study is another example of the critical role nutritional supplements can play in maintaining health throughout the entire lifespan. Because no one can escape time, protecting your brain from decline should be a paramount concern. Vitamin E protects your eyes!

Vitamin E may provide protection against macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness among older people, a team of French researchers has reported.*

Macular degeneration is an eye disorder in the area of the eye where vision is the sharpest, and is a major cause of vision impairment among older individuals. Cause of the disease is poorly understood, and laser treatment has given limited benefit only to a small percentage of patients.

But, results of tests by researchers in France indicate that Vitamin E, acting as an antioxidant nutrient, may work against what scientists call AMD, or age-related macular degeneration.

"These results suggest that Vitamin E may provide protection against AMD, " the French group wrote in the current issue of the journal Archives of Ophthalmology.

The researchers studied information from more than 2,500 adults who were 60 years or older. It was determined that 38 test patients had late AMD, and that the eye disorder was significantly higher in patients who were older than 80.

In patients who showed high body levels of Vitamin E, however, the scientists found that prevalence of late AMD "was decreased by 82 percent ..."

Soy recognized as heart healthy!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that it has approved a health claim, to be used on food labels and in food labeling, on the association between soy protein and the reduced risk of coronary heart disease.

Food products that contain a minimum of 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving will be allowed to claim that eating a minimum of 25 grams of soy protein every day significantly reduces the risk of coronary heart disease.

This health claim, developed by the FDA, and based on scientific evidence from more than 50 independent studies, concluded that 25 grams of soy protein daily, with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, reduces the risk of coronary heart disease.

Millions of people worldwide die from coronary heart disease each year, for which elevated cholesterol levels are a contributing cause.

Family Medicine Journal says vitamin E from diet not enough!

It is nearly impossible to receive sufficient vitamin E from dietary sources alone, reports the November/December issue of Archives of Family Medicine*.

The authors state that "it would take 1000 almonds to provide 400 IU of vitamin E. Supplementation is the only feasible way to provide large doses of Vitamin E, since dietary sources do not lend themselves to this purpose." Daily intakes of 200-800 IU per day are consider optimal for protection from cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin E is found in many foods, but eating enough to receive only 200 IU on a daily basis can increase one’s total calorie intake drastically. Folic acid is essential before and during pregnancy

Everyone needs folic acid, it is an essential vitamin necessary for many metabolic functions, and a new study (conducted in the People’s Republic of China and published in the November 11 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine*) underscores the importance of sufficient folic acid in the diet of pregnant women or women who are planning pregnancy.

Almost 130,000 women who took a folic acid (folic acid is a B-vitamin) supplement before becoming pregnant and during the first trimester had a 40 to 85 percent reduced risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect (NTD), compared to almost 120,000 women who did not take folic acid.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are serious birth defects including spina bifida and anencephaly. About 4,000 pregnancies per year in the United States are affected by these birth defects.

Zinc is a critical nutrient in the prevention of pneumonia and diarrhea in children

A study from the December issue of The Journal of Pediatrics suggests that zinc is a critical nutrient for children, and a deficiency of this essential nutrient may have life- threatening consequences.*

The authors suggest that zinc is intimately involved with the immune system and a deficiency compromises the body’s ability to combat sickness and immune challenges.

The World Health Organization reported that the leading cause of death, diarrhea and pneumonia in undeveloped countries can be reduced with zinc supplements. The study suggests that child mortality rates could be diminished by as much as 41% with zinc supplementation.

Safe drinking water is vital for seniors

Tap water may be a health risk for some seniors says the latest issue of Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. *

Municipal water that has been treated and meets standards for safety may still contain organisms that can make elderly people very sick. The study looked at the hospitalization rates of people aged 65 years and older who were admitted to the hospital with gastrointestinal illness. A link was determined between the patients’ drinking water and their illness. The drinking water of all the patients met local regulations for safety at their time of hospitalization.

Not only the elderly are at risk, those with weakened immune systems may also be affected by contaminated drinking water.

Relying on municipal services to deliver safe drinking water may not be a realistic possibility. In spite of the fact that your tap water may meet or exceed local regulations, it may not be healthy for you. Bottled water is not a viable alternative either. Government regulations regarding bottled water widely vary, and many bottled water products fail purity testing.

Vitamin C can help lower your blood pressure!

An exciting study recently published in The Lancet suggests that vitamin C may play a role in controlling blood pressure.*

Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Linus Pauling Institute gave a group of volunteers with mild to moderate hypertension 500 mg of vitamin C daily. After only one month, the average decrease in blood pressure was 9.1%, nearly as effective as hypertension medication!

The researchers theorize that vitamin C may improve the body’s ability to synthesize nitric oxide, which plays an important role in keeping blood vessels relaxed.

Don’t Forget Magnesium!

A recent study published in the American Journal of Cardiology1 concludes that adult men who have a low daily intake of magnesium have a higher risk of developing heart disease.

As part of the Honolulu Heart Program, researchers discovered that men who had magnesium intakes near or above the RDA (400mg) were less likely to develop heart disease, when compared to men who had the lowest intakes (186mg or less). Study Demonstrates Lycopene Taken In Isolated Form Not Helpful!

A recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute1 suggests that lycopene supplements alone may not have the same cancer-fighting effects as tomatoes or tomato powder. The researchers concluded that although lycopene does have anti-cancer properties, when it’s taken alone it was not effective. In fact, the test group that received the lycopene-only supplements had similar rates of prostate cancer as the group that received only a placebo.
